'Hen Solo' - the lone survivor :o(
'Hen Solo' - the lone survivor :o(
So, last week we woke up to white feathers blowing in the wind - that only means one thing around here; fox raid!  heart sank as I walked into their pen to see our lovely birds lying scattered around on the ground, feathers everywhere, one bird alive but close to death and two birds gone. In all our years of keeping hens here (14) we've never had a fox make it into the pen and have never lost birds like this. What a nightmare!

So, a deep breath and then to clear up. One bird needed to be put out of its misery and the rest collecting up. The lone survivor (now named 'Hen Solo') had some claw or teeth marks on her breast so she'd clearly been grabbed, but I reckon that in the flapping and squawking (which we somehow didn't hear!) she escaped.

The fox was long gone, so Hen Solo was safe enough while I searched about for the hole in the fence I knew was somewhere. Found it. There had been a tiny gap of a few broken links in the chicken wire; I knew it was there but as it was jammed up right against the dense box hedge on the other side of the fence I thought 'No way a fox is getting in there.' Well, I guess I hadn't reckoned on all those days of iron-hard ground (did you know that a significant part of a fox's diet is earthworms? Can't dig for worms when the ground is like a rock.) and vixens maybe already being in pup - for whatever reason, that fox was determined and made it in.

So, that hole is now repaired with some beefy reinforcements that means foxy won't be getting in there again, and there are no other holes. Hen Solo is safe and sound, though still very shaken up and nervous) and we're organising some new friends for her to keep her company until (and we're very excited about this) the 12 eggs we have in an incubator hatch out.

Already thinking up new names for our incubating flock; Princess Layer, Hendolorian, Kylo Hen, Squawkeye, Chick Fury, Pecker Potts and Capt-Hen Marvel. Can you tell we like Star Wars and Marvel movies in our house? Check our our Instagram to see our eggs as they develop!
